GOVERNOR SCHEDULED FOR NORTHWOODS MUSKY OPENER

Here’s one for political pundits and fishing enthusiasts to argue: Can Wisconsin Gov. Scott McCallum land one of Wisconsin’s premier game fish at the Wisconsin Northwoods Musky Opener May 25 in Eagle River? The odds may be against him as his time is limited and it takes on average about 70 hours of fishing to catch a musky.

But you never know. Here are some points in the governor’s favor:

·        He’ll be guided by George Langley, one of the area’s top guides

·        Their boat will head to a known hot-spot just ¾ of a mile from the boat dock in downtown Eagle River

·        During opening weekend, muskies seem more willing to take the bait; last year a number of the big fish were caught on the first week of the season. One teenaged girl from Green Bay caught three documented muskies in just six casts!

·        The musky population is probably at an all-time high, according to the DNR.

The Wisconsin Northwoods Musky Opener is a key event for Wisconsin Northwoods Fishing, a combined effort to welcome fishermen to Vilas, Oneida and Price Counties and the Lac du Flambeau Indian Reservation. This region is home to 2,900 lakes and the largest concentration of freshwater musky-inhabited lakes in the world.
